GMM for Africa
GMM, Merano Missionary Group, is an ONG, a Non-Governmental Organisation founded by Alpidio Balbo. Balbo has been working in various countries of West Africa, such as Benin, Togo, Ghana and Burkina Faso, since 1971 and has helped finance the building wells, health-care centres and schools. He has also worked to promote an “adoption from a distance” programme and encourages communication and dialogue between people of different cultural backgrounds.
Fresh water wells
The GMM finances the sinking of a large number of fresh water wells every year. A well gives hope to hundreds of local people who are often forced to drink dirty water or walk great distances every day to the nearest fresh water well. At present, it costs a minimum of three thousand Euro to sink a well.
“Adoption from a Distance”
The GMM arranges hundreds of “Adoption from a Distance” formalities annually at the cost to the adoptive parents of 165 Euro a year. Thanks to the generosity of countless people, the children involved are housed in functional, cosy accommodation, are well-looked after, get plenty of opportunity for play, are able to attend school and have access to basic medical care, too.
Schools
A large number of schools have been built thanks to money collected by the GMM. We have also helped finance professional schools for girls as well as carpentry and mechanical workshops for male students.
Health
Good health and health care are fundamental aspects of our work and the GMM has always dedicated itself to helping health care centres. We have set up numerous nutrition centres for children as well as dispensaries and given our support to pre-existing hospitals in something like thirty towns and villages.
Communication and Dialogue between Different Cultural Groups
The culture of Africa is rich in history and moral values. The GMM helps collect traditional stories, fables and children’s fairy tales with the aim of showing us all that each one of us has something to give and receive from people of other racial backgrounds.
