The Bariba celebration
Once a year, in late February, the Bariba of Benin meet in Nikki, a city in the north of the country that was the site of an ancient kingdom of this ethnic group.
For the people of Bariba, is the most important event of the year. It is the feast of Ganni: the kings of the villages gather together to honor the king of all Bariba who then travels on horseback through the city streets, while hundreds of people in traditional costumes invade the streets to watch the royal procession. The photos in this gallery were taken by Fabrizio Arigossi on the feast of 2010.
